English Translations

Series:

  • Works of Saint Augustine (WSA). New City Press. This is the best series of Augustine's works in English. Each volume is in the catalog under the individual title of the work. They are located in the open stacks at BR 65 .A9 .E53.
     
  • Fathers of the Church (FOTC). A number of English translations of Augustine's works are included in this series. There are copies in both the reference room and open stacks at BR 60 .F3. The Augustine works in the series are not all together, so searching the catalog for the title of the work is your best bet. 

Latin

Augustine's Latin works can be found in the following series. Citations to Augustine's works in secondary sources may use the listed abbreviations.

  • Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum (CSEL). This series provides critical editions of Latin texts. Most volumes were published in the 1970s. These titles are located in the open stacks at BR 60 .C6. There are a large number of volumes of Augustine's works here. To find them in the library catalog, use either (1) the Latin title of the work you're trying to locate or (2) the series title + Augustine to browse the list of works in the series. 
     
  • Corpus Christianorum, Series Latina (CCL)Similar to CSEL, this series offers critical editions of Augustine's works in Latin. Most volumes were published in the 2000s. These are located in the open stacks at BR 60 .C49. There are a large number of volumes of Augustine's works here. To find them in the library catalog, use either (1) the Latin title of the work you're trying to locate or (2) the series title + Augustine to browse the list of works in the series. 
     
  • Patrologia Latina (PL)This series was completed in the mid-19th-century. Researchers may encounter references to this edition in secondary works written before 1980. They can be found in the open stacks at BR 60 .P314. Volumes 32-47 contain Augustine's writings. Each volume is available for free online. Online Link.
     
  • Bibliotheque Augustinienne (BA)This series contains Latin and a facing French translation of Augustine's works. They are located in the open stacks at BR 65 .A5
     
  • Loeb Classical Library. Some of Augustine's works are included in this series, with Latin and a facing English translation. These include the City of God, Confessions, and some of Augustine's letters. To locate, search "Augustine + Loeb" in the catalog. The English translations are from the early 20th century.
