This is a marvelous gallop through numerous studies by psychologists and neuroscientists about the human capacity to decide to ignore problems, corruption, incompetence, and our own personal failures. From the British Petroleum oil spill to the bystander effect (people in groups are less likely to report smoke coming into a room), one is taken through a journey that teaches the morally corrosive impact of uncritical groups, where questions are not asked and unhealthy cultures emerge. A really fun read; a source of potential sermon illustrations of systemic sin.

Actually the title is a stretch, generational differentials are helpful. But this is a good corrective to the exhausting talk about millennials and Gen Z and how different the church must become. The basic argument is persuasive, namely that such talk often hides a prejudice against the elderly. A compelling and interesting study.

Gillian Tett is an anthropologist who believes that her discipline can really help us all understand the world. From selling Kit Kats in Japan to the Mars Company's decision to go into pet food, she makes a credible case that too often we ignore distinctive cultural dimensions of communities. Although this book is not about religion, there are applications that we need to hear. Anyone interested in mission needs to attend to the argument. Often funny and frequently wise, this is a helpful and important study.

This book provides a valuable resource for parishes, especially those that are predominantly white, who wish to be involved in the important work of racial justice. Moore writes in a very accessible manner that “speaks truth in love.” Moore writes from a place of empathy for progressive white people who desire to be involved in racial justice, but she also speaks forthrightly about ways in which that work gets hampered by the unexamined biases of whiteness. The core of her approach is Belovedness, and her method is guided by the spirit of shalom and the Beatitudes. She speaks from a deeply personal place, sharing vulnerabilities that are rare in today’s world but also inspirational. This book would work well for any group that has begun their journey with anti-racism but needs encouragement, inspiration, and “grit and grace” along the way.

Fans of Gordon Lathrop’s classic works (Holy Things, Holy Ground, Holy People, etc.) will find this book another great resource. Following his earlier book The Four Gospels on Sunday, Lathrop continues his work of connecting biblical and liturgical studies. While well-cited and thoroughly researched, this book remains accessible. Lathrop begins by reminding us that the canon of Scripture developed through the proclamation of it in liturgy. Thus, the interplay between the two is deeply entwined. He then discusses the use of biblical imagery from the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament found in the liturgy. Part two of the book picks up a familiar theme for Lathrop as it connects the use of the Bible with the ordo of the liturgy in both word and meal. He concludes by discussing the role of the Bible with the assembly. This book would make for an excellent discussion for a group with some familiarity with the liturgy and the development of Scripture to further connect the two.

In this book, Stephen Shaver explores the connection between a recent area of study, cognitive linguistics, and sacramental theology. He begins with a brief introduction to cognitive linguistics and its contention that all human thought beyond basic sensorimotor experiences involves embodied metaphors. He then explores conceptual blending, primary metaphors, image schemas, “chained megablend metaphors,” and “tectonic shifting.” He applies these concepts to the question, “Is Christ’s presence in the eucharistic elements literal or figurative?” I will not “spoil” the book by providing his answer to that question. This book is quite academic and could be dense for some readers. However, if you have an interest in cognitive linguistics or the connection between sacramental theology and contemporary philosophical trends, then you will thoroughly enjoy it.

This brief, accessibly written volume introduces key figures, texts, and themes of the mystical tradition and shows how and why the mystics can speak to the church today. Jason Baxter, an expert educator and storyteller, explains that the mystical tradition offers a more robust understanding of God than our current shallow conceptions. Featuring engagement with primary sources and suitable for use in a variety of courses, this book argues that the mystics have much to say to contemporary Christians searching for authentic modes of spirituality.

Texts of violence occur in both testaments of the Christian Bible and are a cause of concern and perplexity for both clergy and folks in the pews. Such concern is one key factor behind the tragic spread of Marcionism among us. Recently, student demand impelled me to begin teaching an elective seminar on violence, which has proven incredibly popular here at VTS. Jerome Creach’s volume has been a suburb text for the course, deftly engaging the key biblical accounts of violence with theological sensitivity and hermeneutical acumen. Given the widespread offense and consternation at biblical violence in the culture and church, I highly recommend this book.

Biblical illiteracy, particularly lack of facility in Old Testament history, thinking, and spirituality, is a major contributor to our church’s dangerously steep current decline. Although the biblical prophets are indispensable for understanding and living our faith, no adequately comprehensive historical and theological introduction to biblical prophecy has appeared since Abraham Joshua Heschel’s classic volume The Prophets. Along with two other leading scholars of prophecy in America, I have labored for many years to remedy that deficit. Renown Episcopalian biblical scholar Ellen F. Davis has this to say of our finished product: “They have produced a study of the prophets for this generation that captures their spirit with the same freshness and urgency that made Heschel’s work invaluable for an earlier generation. Pick up and read.”

Fleming Rutledge is a model Episcopal practitioner of preaching in the mode of biblical exposition (expository preaching), an essential, but increasingly rare competency. She is one of the most theologically solid, homiletically daring, and exegetically grounded Episcopal preachers today. For good reason she was chosen as the commencement speaker here at VTS not too long ago. My seminary students introduced me to this volume, after finding it helpful in writing seminar papers on the future coming of Jesus Christ. Advent, Rutledge convincingly shows, is first and foremost about what we confess at each Eucharist: “Christ will come again.”

This incredibly useful and comprehensive commentary is not for reading cover to cover but for grabbing and consulting whenever you choose to preach or teach from the New Testament. It brings the NT alive by fleshing out its inextricable interrelationship with the Older Testament. The former makes no sense without the latter and cannot stand alone apart from it. Often the NT refers to the OT but more frequently it simply defers to it. It constantly presupposes and alludes to the earlier half of the Christian Bible, and it counts on us knowing its story of what God is doing with history and the world. This reference helps us work within this theological reality.

Literally hot of the press, this theological and literary commentary on the Psalms constitutes the latest volume in a series to which I am proud also to have contributed, the Reading the Old Testament series put out by Smyth & Helwys Publishing. Creach is a leading American scholar of the psalms, and this volume reflects years of close study and theological reflection. Like my earlier volume on Deuteronomy in the series, this commentary is very readable and highly oriented on relevant Christian theological interpretation of the biblical text. It is must-reading.

A brilliant and accessible exploration of one of the most complex, but also one of most beloved Anglican divines, John Donne. Even if you are unfamiliar with his poetry, Rundell explores John Donne’s complex religious evolutions, from his intensely Catholic childhood to his career as dean of St. Paul’s, with real insight and immense enthusiasm.

One of my great pandemic pleasures was watching past episodes on YouTube of the long-running British archaeological program, TimeTeam. A regular participant on TimeTeam was the Roman historian, Guy de la Bedoyère, an always affable presence, whatever the weather and however scarce the pottery shards. Domina is his history of the first Roman emperors, told with particular attention to the role of women within the family: he argues the women in the family of “Caesar Augustus” were absolutely integral to the success of the dynasty.

Cooking for myself and my family certainly kept me sane during the pandemic, but the pandemic also drew out into the open many questions about how and what we eat in Western society and what stories we tell when we eat together (or don’t). In the follow-up to his James Beard Award-winning The Cooking Gene, Michael Twitty again explores his own personal heritage of being both African-American and Jewish. Recipes coexist with rich and beautiful theological meditations; even if you don’t cook, this book will make you want to!

Reflecting on the recent painful time of pandemic, when the wisest and most caring course was not to assemble at all, has illuminated the author's conviction and strengthened it. But as churches return to in-person worship and life in community, they will need to revisit formation in assembly practice. This book articulates why and how the assembly is so important in Christianity. Lathrop intends the book to assist Christian congregations and their pastors or priests to recover vital, participatory, and life-giving in-person worship after the pandemic. He further intends that participants will see and treasure the importance of assembly as the primary form of "church" and as a vital source of Christian daily life. Part 1 of the book looks in depth at the assembly, discusses why the sacraments are assembly events, and explores how the assembly forms Christians for daily living. This book is an edited volume with twenty essays contributed by top scholars. The essays are divided into three parts. Part I deals with the grounds of Christian ethics, and here Rowan Williams starts it off by discussing the process of making moral decisions. Other essays discuss the Bible and Christian ethics (there are separate essays on the Old Testament, the Gospels, and the epistles). The essays in Part two discuss various approaches to Christian ethics, including natural law, virtue ethics, liberation ethics, and others. Part three contains essays discussing a variety of issues, including war, ecology, sexuality, business and economics, medicine and genetics, and others. I found the essays clear and accessible, and they do good job of describing the lay of the land in the topics they discuss. Although some may think of Cambridge Companions as a reference resource for student papers, this one (especially in Part three) provides a wealth of resources for important issues that, in my experience, do indeed come up for discussion and advice in a parish context.

Although this book was designed to help graduate students become better writers of research-oriented material in theology, the essays themselves treat a number of fascinating issues. Ian Markham, for example, explores whether artificial intelligence (AI) might gain sufficient self-consciousness to gain human rights and whether AI could be a candidate for baptism. Andrei Buckareff argues for an interpretation of hell in which humans could experience significant happiness and from which they will always have the option to escape. Celia Deane-Drummond argues for a revised view of the imago Dei that takes account of recent research in ecology and evolutionary anthropology. Christopher Southgate argues that biological evolution poses a challenge to theology that requires what he calls a “compound theodicy.” Other essays address religious pluralism, interpretations of New Testament texts on Christ’s second coming, the relationship between culture and belief, and more. Like the previous book, this is an edited volume with sixteen essays and contributors at the top of their fields. A couple of the essays deploy rather technical arguments, but most are quite accessible.

This book discusses some of the answers to a question I’ve always found fascinating—why do we make decisions that, in hindsight, we believe were wrong and that we should have known to be wrong at the time? That is, what are the things that cause us to ignore available evidence that should enable us to make better decisions? In this fine book, Heffernen discusses a number of biases—confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, etc.—that arise from desires to feel safe, avoid conflict, reduce anxiety, avoid admitting we were previously wrong, and other desires. There are also biases driven by fatigue and other physical limitations. Personally, I’m interested in these issues as a resource for an interpretation of original sin. But even if that’s not your interest, this book is enjoyable and thought-provoking and provides insights into who we are as human beings. The style is lively, and the author illustrates her points with many examples, often from stories I remember reading about in the news.

This book could hardly be more different from the previous one stylistically. It is admittedly still an expensive book whose prose style some (not me!) may consider dry and academic. It’s a valuable read, though, for anyone wishing to become familiar with discussions around analytic theology (or simply to discover what analytic theology is). The 1970s saw a resurgence of analytic philosophy of religion that has continued through the present day. Analytic theology grew out of this lively activity as theologians became interested in this work and built on it theologically. Wood describes this development and discusses criticisms of analytic theology by other theologians (often those more influenced by continental philosophy) and by religious studies scholars. Given that many scholars in each group have suboptimal familiarity with ongoing debates in the other groups, this book provides a valuable resource for analyzing such debates. The rhetoric involved in these debates is often obfuscating, but Wood provides generous and clear explications of the literature and trenchant analyses of the issues.

C. Clifton Black provides a thorough analysis of the most famous prayer in the Christian church, the Lord's Prayer. He begins with an impressionist painting of how the ancients prayed during Jesus' time in order to set the context for understanding the prayer he taught his disciples. Throughout the book, Black systematically interprets the rich meanings of each part of the Lord's prayer. Additionally, he includes an overview of Christian thought on the Lord's Prayer from early church mothers and fathers like Tertullian and Teresa of Avila to modern theologians like Karl Barth. Uniquely, this book is an academic study of the Lord's Prayer with a focus on the rhetorical culture from which it developed as well as the theological, literary, and historical meanings of the prayer itself.

In this deeply personal and daring meditation, eminent theologian Jurgen Moltmann challenges many closely held beliefs about the experience of dying, the nature of death, and the hope of eternal life.
