Best Commentary Series - E-Access

The Library holds electronic versions for many of the best commentary series. These series are all major scholarly resources from across the disciplinary and ideological spectrum of Biblical Studies.

Quality Series (e-access)

  • Old Testament Library / New Testament Library

    • This series is full of mainline scholarship, with commentaries by scholars of international standing. Many classic treatments of books of the Bible are found in here.

  • Interpretation

    • This series is designed as a teaching and preaching resource for an ecclesial context. It falls in-between traditional criticism and exposition. Many commentators of international renown. 

  • Anchor Yale Bible Commentaries

    • The series contains mainline biblical criticism from a broad range of critical perspectives, often offering traditional commentary, interpretation, and original language analysis.

  • Hermeneia

    • This series provides critical/historical commentary with a focus on text-criticism and the history of interpretation. It also heavily relies on knowledge of original languages, and therefore attempts a level of comprehensiveness relative to other series.

  • Berit Olam (Hebrew Bible) / Sacra Pagina (New Testament)

    • This series focuses on the final form of the texts (canonical criticism), with a special interest in matters relating to literary interpretation. It works extremely well as a complement to series with different critical or disciplinary approaches.

  • Belief Theological Commentaries

    • The Belief series contains commentaries on the Bible from the perspective of theology. The authors are all academic theologians, bridging the divide between traditional biblical studies and practical theology. 

  • Abingdon Old Testament & New Testament Commentaries

    • ​Commentaries in this series aim to provide critical guides for pastors and seminary students. Generally, books in the series provide background information to the text as well as exegetical tools for interpretation. The series is a middle ground between advanced scholarly critical commentaries and practical interpretive commentaries.

Lectionary-Based Commentary

  • Feasting on the Word

    • Each volume in the Feasting on the Word series is available as an e-resource. The series provides commentary based on the lectionary readings each week.

History of Interpretation

  • Ancient Christian Commentary

    • NOTE: You must check the "eBook" limiter box to filter the linked search results. This series puts together a variety of ancient Christian sources (largely Patristic and Early Medieval) commentating on passages from the Bible. 

  • Reformation Commentary on Scripture

    • NOTE: You must check the "eBook" limiter box to filter the linked search results. Like the Ancient Commentary series, but featuring major figures from the Reformation-era.

Geographic Commentaries

These series/volumes comprise scholarly commentaries on the Bible from the perspective of scholars working in specific geographies.
